Chris Brown - She Ain't You

Chris Brown releases some impressively schizophrenic singles.  At the moment Look at me Now is sitting at number 6 on the Billboard 100 and Yeah 3X is at number 36. (He also has older singles in the 90 rankings, and is on a single with T-Pain)  This song is riding in the upper 30 of the Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart, and looks like it could follow the rest of his singles into Billboard 100 land.

It only took one line to set me off with this song.
"And when I’m with her its only bout the sex"

I am sick and tired of this song refrain.  Is it really that difficult to keep your junk in your pants?  For a world famous music star the temptations are a million times larger than with ordinary men, but everyday guys will play this song for their significant other because they got a little too drunk at the club and couldn't say no to the chick who came on to him.

The chorus is pure indecisiveness:
"I think I better let her go
Cause I can’t leave you alone
Every day that I’m with her, all I want is you
I wanna leave but I’m afraid
That you don’t even feel the same
And now I realize that she ain’t you
Oh (no she ain’t you)
Whoa oh oh (Na na na)
Whoa oh oh (Na na na)
She ain’t, no she ain’t you"

This is ridiculous!  This isn't a song about comparing a new love to an old lost love.  This is about a guy who has a side chick and ended up getting found out.
"You make it hard for me to see somebody else
I’m calling her your name
Yea its messed up, cause I’m thinkin’ bout you
It’s your fault babe
I never wanted us to break up
No not this way
But you don’t understand it girl"

"It's your fault babe
I never wanted us to break up"

He cheated, and it's her fault?  WHHHAAATTT?!?!

"I never wanted us to break up
No not this way"

Ah, so you wanted to dictate the terms of the breakup?  Getting caught cheating wasn't an idea you had, eh?  That's what happens.  Women always know.

I can't care about your forlorn words of missing the girl you cheated on.  You chose to cheat, you got caught, and you deserve to be lonely.  Jerk.

  1. I really hate that songs like this seem to romanticize infidelity. Like it's so incredibly chivalrous that he thinks about his old girlfriend/wife/what-have-you when he's in bed with the girl he cheated with (or vice versa). There is nothing wonderful or good about cheating. Yes, it often is found out that the reasoning behind the cheating was actually a desire to receive more love/affection/attention from their long term partner, but it does not excuse the behavior or make it appropriate to write songs about it.

  3. Ohmg this is exactly how I feel AND this song just shows the declination of our society. It's like a chain reaction in da 80's the beautiful human nature was recorded in 1993 right here/ human nature by swv was released and that is like a classic to, itjust talks about friendly love, and is something u can actually sing along to(I was born in 1993 nd even I know this!!!) now, fast forward to 2011 where music revolves around hookin up with someone and look what we have autotuned song that has SEX IN like EVErY other freakn word, that line in the song is what really set me off from tha song too.

  4. It might not be talking just about cheating. It could be about a guy having a friend that he knew for a while( had a CRUSH on) but wasn't in a relationship, had a fight with her, and stopped being friends. Then he got a girlfriend and started hanging with her much like the old friend. But hanging with her wasn't the same as his old friend. I actually have a friend who's going through this with me and his girlfriend. It could also be about a previous relationship that was broken because the GIRL had cheated. The song does say "It's your fault, babe." And the guy right away gets with someone else but can't help but think about his old a lot."I never wanted us to break up. No, not this way." You gotta view songs from different perspectives before you judge them. And to Sharon, when you have people who hate you then you know you are successful. So maye people like you may "hate" him but that'll just make him happier and e thankful for those fans out there do like his music.

  5. @Johanna Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment. I suppose you could read the song that way, but why would he say "I never wanted us to break up. No, not this way." if he wasn't in a relationship with the first girl? You don't break up with friends. (And I think CB is a little past singing about relationship issues with female friends. Seems more like a Justin Beiber/teenager issue. CB is a grown man.)

Oy, please stop the "haters = success" refrain. Some people honestly put out garbage, and when people point that out, they're labeled a "hater." This is a cheap cop out for the person to avoid dealing with the criticism.

Take Soulja Boy for example. The kid sparked a dance craze I never understood over a beat he built in Fruity Loops software. The lyrics were whack, but if you pointed out the fact the SB was an awful lyricist, you were labeled a "hater." Instead of defending the point being made and showing an instance where SB showed some mastery in the arena of being an MC, they essentially stuck their fingers in their ears and yelled "I can't hear you."

Having people hate you doesn't mean you've successful. It means you're big enough for people to take notice of you and sometimes criticize. Ignoring criticism is one thing. Calling out your critics as "haters" is weak. It shows you know they have a point to make, but you don't want to face it.

  6. Maybe because he had a CRUSH(stated in first post) on her. I just did this because this song applies to my situation SO much. But then no body even examines the other possible situations that might have been referenced in the song. Why? Haven't we all been told not to judge something by what it looks like? And what about the second situation hmmm? Where it WAS the girls fault? For some reason, not a lot of people when it comes to songs such as this think it could be the woman's fault, I don't know why and I don't like it. Not that I am falling out on my own gender but come on. Sometimes us ladies can be down right mean like that.

Oh and for that take on haters= success, the haters your talking about and the haters I am talking about are not the same. I meant people who actually do hate someone for their success. But for the haters your talking about, yes most people would automatically call them haters but then the person would know what he needed to work on so then those "haters" can't say anything about it the next time. In other words it gives the person an idea of how much they need to grow. And with growing comes success, so even the haters you are talking about will equal success, eventually.
